One day back in ’95 after beach detecting with a friend, the conversation got around to gold prospecting, where it was mentioned that a friend of a friend had some health issues and his doctor recommended some form of exercise, so he took up… of all things… gold prospecting.
Now one thing I knew about prospecting was that it involved camping and that got my attention, so we set up a time to meet this person and he would take us along a camping/gold prospecting trip for the weekend.
He took us to a place called “Potholes” near Winterhaven, California where he commenced to setting up a mini sluice and away he went, digging down into a wash and classifying the dirt then running through this sluice, not having any experience at this prospecting thing I figured that we’d find mostly pebble or pea sized pieces of gold (yeah right!) Well we got done running the sluice and when it came down to panning it out I was surprised!! All I saw at the bottom of the pan was pin head sized pieces of stuff called gold. I couldn’t believe it! Well, as the weekend came to a close, we noticed that the vial was filling up and when we got home and I saw what was in the vial up close and cleaned up, we were hooked! And, as usual, I just had to figure out how to move more dirt and get more water.
Well it didn’t take long before we were running two highbankers through a home-made recirculating system and getting water right out of the nearby Colorado river. We did this for a year or two until we tried detecting. That was fun too and yet another tool under our belt.
Then came drywashing. That enabled us to run water-free from now on except for panning… Bucket & Boomer were off and running buying and trying everything under the sun that would make camping and gold prospecting better and more enjoyable.
So what’s the obvious step from there? Well when you’re on the hunt for that next great piece of gear the logical choice was to stock up on cool prospecting videos for the off season so we could gather ideas. As it turned out, that was the hardest item of all. Through search after search on the internet, there was nothing but a scant few videos on metal detecting and drywashing. Well if you can’t find something, make it!!!
So we started planning a strategy to make an entertaining video on gold prospecting. We didn’t want to get too involved with teaching every step of the many processes and ways to get gold, that was better left to the folks that specialize in that particular piece of gear. We wanted to show a little bit of everything and have fun doing it, and that’s what we did.
We gathered up the collection of gear that we managed to acquire over the years, figured out what we liked and didn’t.
We started making entertainment videos our way, “Rebel Style”. That means the fun is loud, the work is hard and the entertainment is priceless. We pick on each other as well as the viewers, no one is out of the range of our humor but we also bring something else to the table, innovative products and companies, old and new trying to make life easy for the prospector.
We like to sample and test new gear, feature businesses and companies that make them, from the latest drywashers to the websites and forums dedicated to the average prospector. That’s what we really love to do, and thats promote all the folks that make this hobby so great!
